Gray's Anatomy Descriptive and Surgical / Fifth Edition / 1870
By Henry Gray
Illustrated 462 engravings on wood by H. V. Carter
A groundbreaking work in its field, the first edition of Anatomy Descriptive and Surgical was published in London in 1858 with a print run of 2,000 copies. The book's well-organized format, clear text, and detailed illustrations made it highly successful. The following year, the first American edition was published in Philadelphia, with errors from the previous edition corrected. While revised numerous times since then, Gray's Anatomy, as it is popularly known today, remains a standard medical reference work.
Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: None. The book is bound in full contemporary calf with a black Morocco label and title stamped in gilt on the spine. The board's cover, edges, and corners have chipping, scuffs, fraying, and rubbing. In addition, the spine is scuffed. There is a nameplate on the front pastedown and names of the previous owners on the front endpaper. The front endpapers were repaired and tipped in. The text block is toned, with some scattered foxing throughout. The binding is cracked but still secure. I have treated the leather with an archival-conservation grade reconditioner and leather consolidant (Cellugel) to work against drying and red rot.
